Full Story : They Laughed When She Walked Through the Strange Golden Panel, But When Dante Stood Up, the Entire Hall Fell Silent
PART 1: THE WOMAN EVERYONE WAS LAUGHING AT
The laughter reached Elena before she reached the center of the hall.
She heard it clearly.
Soft at first.
Then louder.
Several women turned toward one another, covering their mouths as they laughed behind jeweled hands.
Elena kept walking.
She refused to look at them.
The enormous cream-colored panel stood directly ahead, framed in dark wood and thin gold trim. Its strange human-shaped opening made the entire scene feel almost unreal.
She stepped through it slowly.
Her sapphire-blue costume glittered beneath the chandeliers.
Gold chains around her waist moved gently with every step.
Her long auburn hair fell over her shoulders.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then another burst of laughter came from the women on the left.
Elena lowered her eyes.
She had expected judgment.
She had expected whispers.
But she had not expected the entire room to feel as though it already knew something about her that she didn't.
At the far end of the hall, Dante sat motionless on the enormous gilded throne.
He had been smiling only moments earlier.
Then something changed.
His smile disappeared.
His eyes became fixed on Elena.
One woman leaned toward another.
“Did you see her?”
The second woman smiled.
“Yes.”
They laughed again.
Elena heard them.
Her fingers tightened slightly at her sides.
But she continued forward.
She had promised herself that she would not turn around.
She would not give them the satisfaction of seeing her embarrassed.
She would finish whatever had brought her into this strange hall, then leave.
That was all.
Except Dante wasn't looking at the other women anymore.
He was watching her.
Something about Elena's expression disturbed him.
Not because she looked frightened.
Because she looked as though she had already accepted being misunderstood.
Dante leaned slightly forward.
The woman beside him whispered something.
He didn't answer.
His gaze remained fixed on Elena.
Then Elena stopped.
Only for a second.
Her eyes moved toward the strange panel behind her.
There was something about it that made her uncomfortable.
She couldn't explain why.
She looked back toward Dante.
Their eyes met across the enormous hall.
The laughter suddenly felt farther away.
Dante's face remained unreadable.
Then one of the women laughed again.
This time Elena heard the words.
“She actually believes she belongs here.”
A few women giggled.
Elena's face changed.
Only slightly.
She looked down.
Dante heard it.
His expression hardened.
The amusement that had been in his eyes was gone.
Completely.
One of the women noticed.
Her smile faded.
“What's wrong?”
Dante didn't respond.
Instead, he placed both hands on the armrests of his throne.
The room seemed to hold its breath.
Elena looked up.
Dante slowly began to rise.
And every woman who had been laughing suddenly stopped.
PART 2: THE QUESTION NOBODY EXPECTED
Dante stood.
The long purple robe fell around him, its gold embroidery catching the chandelier light.
Nobody moved.
The women who had been laughing moments earlier now watched him with uncertainty.
Elena remained near the center of the hall.
She didn't know what was happening.
Dante stepped away from the throne.
His eyes remained fixed on her.
Then he spoke.
“¿Quién te dijo que vinieras aquí?”
His voice was calm.
But there was something beneath it.
Elena hesitated.
“I was invited.”
Dante's eyebrows tightened.
“¿Por quién?”
“I don't know.”
A murmur moved through the room.
Dante glanced toward the women.
“¿Quién la recibió?”
Nobody answered.
One woman lowered her eyes.
Another suddenly became fascinated by the bracelet on her wrist.
Dante noticed.
He walked down from the platform.
His footsteps echoed against the marble.
Elena instinctively stepped backward.
Dante stopped.
He didn't approach her further.
Instead, he looked at the strange panel.
“¿Sabes qué es eso?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“¿Te explicaron por qué debías pasar por ahí?”
“No.”
Dante turned toward the women.
“Then why were you laughing?”
Silence.
The question landed harder than a shout.
Nobody answered.
One woman finally whispered:
“We weren't laughing at her.”
Dante looked at her.
“Then what were you laughing about?”
The woman opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Elena stared at the floor.
Dante looked back at her.
For the first time, his expression softened.
“You can leave.”
Elena looked surprised.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
She looked toward the enormous doors.
Then back at him.
“But I came here because someone told me I had to.”
Dante's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Elena hesitated.
“I was given an envelope.”
Dante became completely still.
“An envelope?”
She nodded.
“It only contained an address.”
“Do you still have it?”
Elena reached into a small hidden pocket beneath her costume and removed a folded piece of paper.
Dante took it.
He unfolded it.
His face changed.
The paper contained only one sentence.
LET HER WALK THROUGH THE PANEL.
Dante stared at the words.
Then at Elena.
“Who gave you this?”
“I never saw her face.”
“Her?”
Elena nodded.
“She was wearing a black veil.”
A murmur spread through the women.
Dante turned sharply.
One of them had gone pale.
“You know something,” he said.
The woman shook her head.
“No.”
Dante stepped toward her.
“Look at me.”
She did.
Her eyes were terrified.
“I don't know anything.”
Dante looked at the other women.
Then back at Elena.
He folded the paper.
“Everyone leave.”
Nobody moved.
Dante's voice became firmer.
“I said leave.”
The women began walking toward the side doors.
Elena remained where she was.
Dante waited until the hall was almost empty.
Then he noticed something on the floor.
A small gold pendant.
He picked it up.
Elena recognized it immediately.
“That belongs to the woman in the black veil.”
Dante looked at her.
“You're certain?”
“Yes.”
He turned the pendant over.
There was a tiny symbol engraved on the back.
A crescent surrounding a single letter.
Dante's face became tense.
“You shouldn't have seen this.”
Elena frowned.
“Why?”
Dante didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the dark corridor behind the throne.
Someone had left the room.
Someone who had been watching them.
And Dante suddenly realized something.
The laughter had never been the real mystery.
It was a distraction.
PART 3: THE MESSAGE BEHIND THE WALL
Dante took Elena through a private corridor behind the hall.
The walls were covered with enormous paintings and antique mirrors.
Neither spoke.
Finally Elena asked:
“What does the symbol mean?”
Dante continued walking.
“It belonged to someone who disappeared a long time ago.”
“Who?”
He stopped.
“Someone who knew too much.”
Elena looked at him.
“About what?”
Dante turned.
“About this place.”
She didn't understand.
He continued walking.
They entered a smaller room filled with old books and locked cabinets.
Dante placed the pendant on the table.
Then he opened a drawer.
Inside were dozens of similar objects.
Elena stared.
“You have more?”
“I found them years ago.”
“Why didn't you destroy them?”
Dante looked at her.
“Because I didn't know which one was real.”
Elena felt a chill.
“What does that mean?”
Dante didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward a wall covered by dark red fabric.
He pulled it aside.
Behind it was a narrow metal door.
He inserted a key.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a tiny room.
There was only a chair, a table and an old recording device.
Elena stared.
“What's this?”
Dante stepped inside.
“I've never shown this to anyone.”
He pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice emerged.
“Dante, if you're hearing this, she has finally arrived.”
Elena froze.
Dante's expression changed.
The recording continued.
“Do not trust the women in the hall.”
Elena looked at him.
Dante didn't move.
The woman's voice continued.
“The panel is not what they told you.”
Static.
Then:
“It was never designed to measure anyone.”
Dante's eyes narrowed.
Elena whispered:
“Then what is it?”
The recording stopped.
Dante pressed the button again.
Nothing.
He tried another switch.
Still nothing.
Then Elena noticed a tiny envelope beneath the machine.
She picked it up.
Her name was written on it.
ELENA.
Her hands trembled.
“I've never seen this before.”
Dante took it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
Elena stared.
It showed the same hall.
But the photograph had been taken many years earlier.
The strange panel stood in the exact same position.
A group of women stood around it.
And in the center was a young girl.
Elena's breathing stopped.
The girl looked exactly like her.
Same auburn hair.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Dante stared at the photograph.
“That's impossible.”
Elena shook her head.
“That isn't me.”
Dante turned the photograph over.
There was a date.
Twenty-two years earlier.
And beneath the date:
SHE WILL RETURN WHEN THE LAUGHTER STOPS.
Elena felt dizzy.
“What does that mean?”
Dante looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Suddenly, they heard footsteps outside.
Dante immediately closed the drawer.
The footsteps stopped.
Someone was standing on the other side of the door.
Then came three knocks.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Dante looked at Elena.
“Stay behind me.”
The door opened.
Nobody was there.
Only another envelope lay on the floor.
Dante picked it up.
This one contained a single photograph.
His own face.
Taken only minutes earlier.
He was standing beside Elena.
Someone had photographed them from inside the mansion.
Dante's jaw tightened.
Elena whispered:
“Someone is watching us.”
Dante looked toward the ceiling.
“No.”
He slowly looked back at her.
“Someone has been watching this entire room.”
Then the recording device turned on by itself.
The woman's voice returned.
This time, there was only one sentence.
“Dante, ask her what she remembers about the night she disappeared.”
Elena went completely still.
“I never disappeared.”
Dante looked at her.
The machine clicked off.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Elena whispered:
“I think I did.”
PART 4: THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
The room became unbearably quiet.
Dante stared at Elena.
“What do you remember?”
She closed her eyes.
“Nothing.”
“Try.”
“I remember waking up in a small room.”
“When?”
“I don't know.”
“How old were you?”
Elena swallowed.
“Maybe seven.”
Dante's face changed.
“What happened after that?”
“I remember a woman singing.”
“What woman?”
“I don't know.”
“Do you remember her face?”
“No.”
Elena touched the photograph.
“But I remember this.”
She pointed to the strange panel.
“I saw it when I was little.”
Dante stared at her.
“You've seen it before?”
She nodded.
“I remember standing behind it.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
She closed her eyes again.
Then another fragment surfaced.
“A man was arguing.”
“Who?”
“I couldn't see him.”
“What did he say?”
Elena's breathing became unsteady.
“He said…”
She paused.
“He said they would never find me.”
Dante stepped backward.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Who was he talking about?”
Elena shook her head.
“I can't remember.”
Then she looked at the photograph again.
“There was another girl.”
Dante frowned.
“Another girl?”
“Yes.”
“She looked like me.”
Dante picked up the photograph.
“Are you sure?”
Elena nodded.
“She was standing beside me.”
He turned the photograph toward the light.
Only then did he notice something he hadn't seen before.
A second child stood partially hidden behind the panel.
Her face was blurred by the angle.
But around her neck was a small gold pendant.
The same symbol.
The crescent.
The letter.
Dante's eyes widened.
“The woman in the black veil wasn't looking for you.”
Elena looked at him.
“She was looking for the other girl.”
A loud crash came from the main hall.
Both turned.
Dante rushed toward the door.
Elena followed.
They entered the grand hall.
The strange panel was still standing in the center.
But the women were gone.
The enormous doors were closed.
And the pendant Dante had placed on the table was now missing.
Elena stared at the panel.
“Dante…”
He followed her gaze.
Something was different.
A small section of the cream-colored surface had opened.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Dante approached cautiously.
Elena grabbed his sleeve.
“Don't.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
“I remember this.”
“What?”
She stared into the darkness.
“I remember someone telling me never to open that door.”
Dante looked inside.
At the end of the passage was a faint light.
Then a woman's voice whispered from the darkness.
“Elena.”
She froze.
Dante stepped in front of her.
The voice came again.
“You finally came back.”
Elena's eyes filled with fear.
“Who are you?”
Silence.
Then:
“The girl in the photograph is waiting for you.”
Dante looked at Elena.
“What girl?”
But Elena wasn't listening anymore.
She was staring into the passage.
Because she suddenly remembered one more thing.
The other girl had not been a stranger.
She had been holding Elena's hand.
And before they were separated, the girl had whispered:
“Promise me you'll come back.”
Elena slowly covered her mouth.
Dante whispered:
“Do you know who she is?”
Elena looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I know where she is.”
Dante's face tightened.
“Where?”
Elena pointed toward the darkness.
“Behind that door.”
The lights in the palace suddenly went out.
For several seconds, there was absolute darkness.
Then a single spotlight illuminated the strange human-shaped panel.
And in its center appeared the shadow of a little girl.
Elena stepped backward.
Dante stared.
The shadow slowly raised one hand.
Then it pointed directly toward Elena.
A woman's voice whispered through the darkness:
“She has been waiting twenty-two years.”
The lights went out again.
And when they returned, the shadow was gone.
But on the floor beneath the panel was a fresh photograph.
Dante picked it up.
His face went pale.
It showed two little girls standing together.
One was Elena.
The other was unmistakably alive.
And written across the bottom were four words:
May you like
SHE IS HERE.
